Update: Madonna To Adopt Another Child From Malawi

Update: Madonna’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, says reports that Madonna wants to adopt a girl named Mercy from Malawi are false, “There is no truth to this rumor. It’s an old one – wasn’t true then or now. Madonna is starting her tour in a week.” Liz did not say Madonna will never adopt again. Perhaps this is something that will happen after her tour?

Madonna is set to adopt a girl, it has been confirmed. The singer has almost finalized the adoption proceedings to adopt 3-year-old Mercy James from Malawi now that her marriage to Guy Ritchie is stronger. Malawian officials say she is “on the cusp” of completing the process. Penstone Klembe, Malawi adoption minister, confirmed this news,

“Madonna’s representatives have been visiting the girl. The adoption is now advanced – all the government is waiting for is Madonna to forward the petition of adoption formalities. Then Mercy will be able to leave the country for a new life.”

According to friends, Madonna, 49, and Guy, 39 renewed their bid to adopt Mercy after working to save their marriage following rumors the singer was having an affair with Alex Rodriguez,

“The adoption process in Malawi is so long and stressful that all the legal wrangling put a huge strain on their marriage,” a source said. “They dropped proceedings to pour all their energies into each other. But Madonna now feels they are stable enough to press ahead with the adoption again.”

However, Mercy’s family are reportedly opposed to the adoption. Her grandmother, Lucy Chekechiwa, 60, stated that she is “firmly against” Mercy being adopted outside of her home country,

“We know that it is Mercy who Madonna really wants. We heard it is because my granddaughter is such a beautiful, happy child. Twice I have told the adoption people that I do not want Mercy to go outside the country. But they keep on at us. Now they say that Mercy will be leaving us, but can return at age 18. Yet I might not be alive then.”

The couple originally bid to adopt Mercy last year, but it was dropped after the girl’s uncle, John Nglanade blocked the application.

I think it’s great that Madonna is adopting 2 kids who need parents. I hate all the cynicism that goes on about it. I think she is doing a good thing for sincere reasons, and seems like she really loves David and will probably love Merci as well. The cynicism is very ugly imo.

What part of “You cannot adopt from Malawi unless you live in that country” does she not get? This isn’t a fast-tracked adoption; this is adopting from a country WHO DOES NOT ALLOW IT. It’s disgusting that she gets special treatment – you know if you or I tried to adopt from Malawi they wouldn’t let us.

I am especially disgusted that a family member is opposing it and the government doesn’t care. Oh well, as long as Madonna gets what she wants, what does she care what the family wants?

i am not a fan, but its great that they want to adopt again. its nice that her son will have a sister from his birthplace.

She’s not adopting a baby from Malawi. It’s been shot down by her Press Agent who said it’s an old rumor that’s going around again and it’s still not true. Madonna is going on tour in a week and a half and isn’t adopting any baby.

Nicole, she never got any special treatment. And she’s not the first to adopt from there. There was a couple from England before her.

“you know if you or I tried to adopt from Malawi they wouldn’t let us.”
You’d probably have to go through the same ropes as Madonna. It took her a long time. She never expected ti to be quick.

What about this gets under your skin so much? I find it very strange

you know what i find strange, everytime she has something coming up she has this whole publicity thing going. thats what happened with the last adoption. madonna has always been publicity hungry and her rep said she wasnt adopting david and she did. if you dont know by now madonna’s rep is one of the best liars ever. if the FAMILY OF THE GIRL is opposing that she leave the country( God forbid they want to see the child grow up) and madonna and the govt are just ignoring them, it shows you what kind of heart she has. I am all for people adopting to help children but when its used as a publicity stunt to garner attention for her past dead career, it crosses the line.

I agree, this outright robbery of a child from their family is despicable. Who is Madonna to say that “oh I must adopt this child for he/she is clearly less fortunate and would live a much better life with what I could provide for him/her.” Her holier than thou attitude is revolting, she’s just so selfless and so spiritual and yada yada yada….give me a break. This is worse than those loser celebrities like Larry Birkhead who gain their only income from exploiting their child, in fact this is EXPONENTIALLY worse.

If the grandmother or the uncle object, why don’t they adopt the child? My father was raised in an orphanage where he was abused because his relatives blocked a couple of different adoptions for “religious” reasons. It should only matter that a child goes to a safe and loving enviroment.

A lot of times children in third world countries are given up to orphanages because the family can’t afford to feed them. It’s their only option, because otherwise the child would starve to death. Is it right that someone can then just come and take the child, when the only reason the family doesn’t have it is because the choice was between the child living in an orphanage or starving to death?

i really don’t think Madonna, of all people, needs to do anything beyond existing to get publicity. She’s frickin MADONNA! people follow her all over the place, so i don’t see her pulling publicity stunts just for the hell of it. And considering all the negative backlash she got after she adopted David I doubt she’d want this adoption so publicized before it was final. We like to hate celebrities for doing things that are beyond our reach because of their status, but wouldn’t you? if you felt passionate about something and had the means to obtain it, you would go for it right? I think it’s easy to judge, but hard to relate. No one knows what it’s like to be her.
