Joel Madden & Nicole Richie Explain Sparrow's Unusual Name

Joel Madden and Nicole Richie have shed some light on the inspiration behind their new son Sparrow James Midnight's unusual name.

"We have different tastes in names," the House of Harlow designer tells People magazine. "Sparrow was one we both liked. I liked the way it sounded with Harlow."

Joel adds, “It reminded me of the Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue. My worry raising a son in Hollywood is, what will he have to struggle for? I wanted to give him a name that he’s going to have to stand up for. I love it, I think it’s a beautiful name.”

The Good Charlotte rocker heaps praise upon his girlfriend Nicole, who he says is a wonderful mom to both Sparrow and big sister Harlow, 21 months.

“While I’m working, it all piles on Nicole. She takes care of the kids, and it never gets to her. She doesn’t feel like she’s giving up anything – she is wholeheartedly their mom.”

I've loved Sparrow's name from the moment I heard it. I enjoy the way the word "sparrow" sounds. Even before Sparrow Madden was born, I thought it was interesting that the birds had a beautiful name, but they aren't, in my opinion, the most beautiful species of bird by any means.

Did anyone else read that book called "Girl" when they were a teenager, with the character of Todd Sparrow? Heh.

So one of the reasons they picked Sparrow was so they could give their son something to struggle for????????

I'm 7 months pregnant and my husband and I picked Ben for our sons name. We didn't think he would be able to get teased terribly with it. I guess we are strange and old fashioned since we are trying to make his life easy!

These people are nuts. I'm sorry, but that's the most ridiculous reason for a name I've ever heard. Normal parents don't want their kids to get beat up on the playground everyday for having a weird name, but apparently not in LA! Well we know that to be true since the rest of Hollywood also names their kids after fruits and wildlife. But Joel Madden better hope he can always pay the bills. So young and so stupid, that one.

I agree that it might sound ridiculous naming your child so he can struggle for something, but no more so than giving your kid a name so that he/she will "fit in" and not stand out. How completely and utterly boring and safe, blechh. Differences build character. I have a very unique name here in the US, and while I may have had a hard time with it growing up, I wouldn't change it for anything in the world now. People have to remember that these kids grow up to be adults. At the end of the day, people should pick names that they like, and hope their kids like it too. If Sparrow hates his name, he'll change it.
