Brooke Shields: “I’m Confident In My Own Mothering”

Brooke Shields has had a busy career with many, very public highs and lows. The actress has gone from a young child, to a wife and mother in the media spotlight, including all of the broken hearts and friendships in between, and a tumultuous relationship with her alcoholic mother. Speaking with Ladies Home Journal, Shields revealed details on her relationship with her mother, who is now suffering from Alzheimer’s, as well as her views on being in show business at 44, how she balances her career with raising her two young daughters, Rowan, 6 and Grier, 3, and a bit of insight on some of her other past relationships.

On her relationship with her mother: “Her approval is still so important to me. I’ll see her and think, She’s going to say my hair’s too dark. She’s going to ask if I’ve gained weight. I might as well be 10. I’m confident in my own mothering, I’ve been making all my own decisions for a long time, but after all these years, I want my mom.”

On her first marriage to Andre Agassi: “With Andre it was like, ‘Please be the adult. Please take care of me. And he did.”

On her intense friendship with Michael Jackson: “Both of us needed to be adults very early. But when we were together we were two little kids having fun.”

On her children in show business: “It’s a high like you can’t imagine. It’s like a drug. But no, I don’t want them involved. Every day you’re told what you are not: You’re not short enough, you’re not thin enough, you’re not pretty enough. You’re always losing out.”

On if she is planning to have plastic surgery: “I want laser treatment because I’m not a fan of my wrinkles, but I have to find someone with a light touch. I’m scared I’ll end up looking like the Joker.”

On balancing work and family: “I’m greedy. I want it all. I want to be able to do the projects I want to do and be the kind of mother my daughters want. We were walking to school yesterday and my daughter said, ‘Mom, I want you to be a class mom.’ I laughed in her sweet little face and said, ‘You want me to be a class mom?’ I said, ‘I’m a classy mom. Isn’t that enough?'”

Brooke, who has been married to Chris Henchy for nine years, can be seen in her upcoming movie Furry Vengeance which is set for release in April.
