We often see celebrity dads saving the world in epic stories played out on the big screen, or singing about what they'd like to do to change the world, but these papas are wielding their powers to help preserve and protect the planet in real life. Actors Kevin Costner, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, and singers Jack Johnson and Dave Matthews show us how easy it is to be green.

Kevin Costner has seven kids, but he still finds the time to add cleaning up catastrophic oil spills to his list of to-dos. In response to the devastating BP oil spill currently polluting the Gulf of Mexico, Costner has contributed 32 innovative oil-separating centrifuge machines, which he has spent close to $20 million dollars and the past 15 years developing that separate water from contaminating oil in order to clean-up the ocean.

Of the BP oil spill and the technology he's offering to help turn back the tide on the horrifying situation Costner offers,

I'm not a spokesman for anybody … but the ecosystem can't speak for itself," he said. "I'm not a spokesman except for the fishermen who … can't speak for themselves. They're wondering where an answer is. And I'm not a white horse. I'm not on a white horse. I'm not the savior to this thing. But I'm kind of saying, I've got a life preserver.

Johnny Depp has always been a heartbreaker, but it's a little known fact that he's also an environmentalist. The talented actor purchased his own private island to enjoy with his family, and he's doing all he can to make it eco-friendly.

Treehugger reports:

Though owning more than one home--especially when your second is on its own Caribbean island, thousands of miles from your first, in France--isn’t very eco-friendly, Johnny Depp has enlisted Mike Strizki to turn his 35-acre island getaway into a self-sustaining habitat run on solar-hydrogen power. No doubt the rest of his building plans will be equally energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Talk about paradise -- being secluded with Johnny Depp on a sustainably outfitted island! We're certain his long-time love Vanessa Paradis, and their children Lily-Rose, 11, and Jack, 8 will feel quite at home on this retreat with their pirate playing dad!

Brad Pitt no doubt has his hands full raising his six kids, with love Angelina Jolie: Maddox, 8, Pax, 6, Zahara, 5, Shiloh, 4, and 1 ½-year-old twins, Knox and Vivienne, but he still finds time to lend a hand to making the world a better place.

Ever since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Brad Pitt has been spearheading re-builiding efforts with the Make It Right foundation, which "builds safe, sustainable, and affordable homes for working families."

With regard to his mission with Make it Right, Pitt told People Magazine,

We knew we couldn't bring back the families and friends who were lost, bring back the heirlooms and pictures, but maybe, in the process of rebuilding, we could build something smarter to create a better way of life.

The gorgeous actor also wants to help keep peoples' grooming regimens green. He partnered with skin care brand Kiehl's to create and endorse their Aloe Vera Biodegradable Liquid Body Cleanser. The bottle is 100% post consumer recycled, the liquid cleanser is 100% biodegradable, and it's the first beauty product with cradle to cradle certification.

  • Jack Johnson

Singer/musician Jack Johnson's tunes are loved by families for their lighthearted messages and upbeat tempos. Perhaps you recall his hit "The 3 R's," (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) from the Curious George soundtrack.

The do-gooding daddy's benevolent tunes may be enjoyed on his Eco-Tour this summer. The awesome green statistics behind this tour include the following, as reported by Do Something:

Environmental advocate Jack Johnson is about to set out on... an eco-friendly world tour!Like his last tour, Johnson will donate 100% of his profits to charities that support the environment, arts education, and music education. And of course, the tour buses will run on biodiesel fuel... Johnson's fifth album "To the Sea" ... was recorded and produced in solar powered studios.

With regard to greening his tour and concerts, the singer himself offers,

It's so easy to fall into the path of just doing what everybody else does out of convenience, so we did this for the kids, especially the younger audience that comes to our shows, to let them know that you don't have to follow the norm and see that you can make a change if you want to.

Dave Matthews is another rockstar daddy on a mission to leave a lighter footprint on the planet. He has used his fame and talent to throw benefit concerts to highlight the efforts of world renown conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall. He also performed in the Live Earth event to help combat global warming.

According to Planet Green, Matthews' 2009 "So Much to Save" tour "encouraged fans to recycle and volunteer, diverting more than 42,000 pounds of waste from landfills."

On the home front, Dave Matthews boasts an eco-friendly diapering regimen. He told People Magazine,

We use cloth diapers for our new baby because I think diapers might be the No. 3 piece of garbage [in terms of environmental damage]. So, if you have a little cloth diaper service nearby, that's good.
