Willow Smith Describes Inspirational Song: "Don't Be Afraid To Be Yourself"

Budding pop sensation Willow Smith, 10 later this month, recently released the music video for Whip My Hair. The daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith opened up to MTV News about her debut single, which is meant to be an inspiration to all.

Within the video are a troop of hair-lashing kids Willow has dubbed the Warriorettes. According to Willow, it takes a strong character to be a Warriorette.

Me and my mom first came up with Willowettes, and then we came up with Warriorettes," the mini fashionista explained. "It takes a warrior to stand up for themselves and not let anybody tell them that what they're wearing or what they're saying or what they're doing is wrong."

Will and Jada's youngest child added that while being a Warriorette means standing by your beliefs, you need a soft side as well.

"It takes a warrior to do that, but it still takes sensitivity ... also," she said. "We were kind of sloshing between Warriorettes and Willowettes, so we just called them Warriorettes, 'cause that's the stuff that you need to do that."

Willow went on to describe the inspirational message behind her catchy tune.

Whip My Hair means don't be afraid to be yourself and don't let anybody tell you that that's wrong. Because the best thing is you."

Willow - whose brother Jaden Smith, 12, recently starred in The Karate Kid - is now signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation record label.

Well what she's wearing in that photo is certainly wrong because it looks really bad. And it's "My mom and I". This little girl needs to be in school and not have her "career" be more important than her eucation.

The smith family is really self-centered. They had the attitude its all about me. The parents are really conceited they named their children after themselves Trey Willard jr willow and jaden .I guess the only normal one is trey he the oldest and seem to be down to earth.

I agreed with Sophie Smith.

Haters unite!

...Please, people. Grow up. The amount of hatred directed at this family is scary. I'm pretty sure that it's because of their race, though of course I can't prove it (and people are going to scream at me for even suggesting this to be true). Don't you have anything positive and healthy to do with your day, rather than picking on a little girl???

Anonymous said:

They probably like the attention anyway. And we would not have to pick at this family if they were not in our face everyday!! And it has nothing to do with the color of their skin. They would be as annoying if they were white. This family thinks and behaves like they are so special and better than others and that's just not cool.

I am black and I agree with everyone in their sentiment!! I think her parents need to get a grip and put her 9 yr old behind in school and forget about her "career" for now as well....now what does that make me?!?!? Jealous?!?!? I wonder!! As for race Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes get a lot of bashing for their daughter so race really has nothing to do with it...U NEED TO GET A GRIP!!!

Cute kid, and it's awesome that she is inspiring other girls to be confident in expressing themselves.

It really is sad that there is so much hate out there (as the previous posters have demonstrated), and someone needs to teach our girls to rise above the nastiness.

Go Willow!

The amount of hatred directed at this family is scary. I'm pretty sure that it's because of their race. I knew some one was going to pull out the race card. There are plenty of rich black family who seem to be a pleasant family Holly Robinson Peette Kobe Bryant seal Monica Michael Jordan Vanessa Williams babyface t.i and yet they are rich and seem to be down to earth. The smith family is all cocky self centered and conceited especially willow and jaden.

As a teacher of children Willows age, I completely agree with the advocates of getting this child and her older brother BACK IN SCHOOL and stop all this "career" nonsense! SCHOOL is their "career"! When these kids grow up they will have missed OH SO MUCH! Hope they do not wind up on the front pages in years to come going on and on and on about their parents.

Anonymous said:

Hi Grandma. How, pray tell, do you personally know that they are not in school? I am pretty confident that they have private tutors who are teaching them at least as much as their peers who attend regular schools. (I am also a teacher.)

Maybe you are worrying for no reason! It could be a huge weight off your shoulders to find out that they actually are getting an adequate education, in addition to having healthy hobbies in the artistic world.

Willow has said herself in an interview that she's having problems with school. Not everyone here comments before informing themselves on the subject.

Anonymous said:

Exactly! She's clearly in school (at home or in the traditional sense), because otherwise, how could she be having problems at school!

Thanks, Sophie, for proving that Willow indeed is being educated. I agree that other people should think/research before they post ignorant comments about how she is not being educated.

Love them...what's wrong with being confident and focused...nothing at all. There are so many celebrity children...Dakota Fanning, the Olsen twins to name a few that started very young....did anybody say that their parents needed to focus on school for them...no. They are home schooled just like many of the child actors that we let our kids watch on the Disney channel. Their family has a focus, and feel they have a purpose...there's nothing wrong with that. I love her and her song...May they continue in their journey to achieve their family goals!

Agreed!

How do you know they're not in school? I'm sure they are getting an education. Some people post before they use their brains to do so. Willow seems to be a well-grounded, confident little girl. Her song is catchy and cute. People need to relax....really, the face that she sings and can make some money at it, and has the means to dress in funky clothing is not going to turn her into a party animal like Lindsay or Paris.

Sophie Smith said:

Well use your brain to do some research and you'll see why almost everyone is saying that she should be in school. She's NOT in school. She is homeschooled.

Anonymous said:

Being homeschooled is the same thing as being "in school." Even though you are not literally "in" a school building, you are still being educated with a formal, structured curriculum (usually), by a professional teacher.

I don't home-school my kids, because I prefer that they are in a classroom with others, but I know people who do home-school, and their children are extremely bright and capable.

Please do some more research before you post comments like this that do not make much sense. You seem to have contradicted yourself.

Sophie Smith said:

Willow's "homeschooling" is obviously not good since she reportedly has troubles with math AND reading and she is in 4TH GRADE!!! Is actually kind of weird considering her parents have plenty of money to get her good teachers. And read both posts if you want to see why I replied the way I did.

Anonymous said:

OBVIOUSLY not good? I know lots and lots of smart, dedicated, hard-working 4th grade kids who struggle in some way with math and reading.

Besides, money may "buy" teachers, but it will never buy any kid's way out of having troubles with challenging new topics. Please.

You're still not making much sense!!

Sophie Smith said:

Well I know quite a few kids around Willow's age, and most of them don't have problems with reading and maths at all, or to the extent that this girl reportedly does. I don't know what it's like where you live though. However, if you want to understand what we are all talking about, lookup the actual interview where she admits that she is having problems with her studies BECAUSE she's missing out on a regular school. If she were going to classes like most other kids her age, she would most likely not be having that many problems with her subjects. THAT is what we are all trying to say. Maybe after you watch the interview it will start making more sense to you. And children homeschooled by good teachers are usually ahead of their peers, THAT is why I found it unusual that Willow is actually behind.

Anonymous said:

thanks.

Anonymous said:

How can Will and Jada justify this child pursuing a signing career when she is having trouble with her studies? I don't care how much money they have, academics should come first!

Anonymous said:

emily, nobody hates this family.

Wow! Why do you choose to read this story when you obviously cant stand this family. Will Smith was a child actor/ artist and hasnt done too bad for himself. He has lots of supporters in the industry that believe him and his wife are very loving parents and completely capable of making the tough decisions without any help from you. His children are obviously talented and he is not some dum-dum off the street trying to make his child something they are not. I prefer him over the Lohahn parents any day. Regardless of how anyone feels there will always be child stars...get over it. You should also realize this 9 year old child will more than likely read some of your nonsense. I do believe this uncalled for hatred is way more harmful than her being prideful. As parenting goes maybe your parents should have taught you that if you have nothing nice to say...say nothing at ALL.

okay willow smith and jaden smith are so cute i love jaden he started at a young age willow she needs to focus on school first and then started on her career i love her song and how she trying to do both but she will get lost in life without and education go willow i wish you the best and will be looking forward to seeing you succeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
