Cher: I Have Regrets About My Parenting

Cher's life and career seem to be on the upswing these days with her role in Burlesque and her new star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. But she recently opened up about a regret she has – having children too early.

"I have a lot of regrets about my parenting...Maybe I should have had children when I was older," she says.

Cher was just 23 when she and first husband Sonny Bono welcomed daughter Chastity in 1969, when Sonny & Cher was at the height of its success. She had her second child, son Elijah, in 1976 with husband Gregg Allman.

Unfortunately, Cher admits she was so consumed with her career that she fears she didn't spend enough quality time with her children. "I have been a good mother in fits and starts," she says. "But when you do work like mine, and I'm like most working mothers - they never feel like they're doing a good job because they're never able to devote enough time."

cher, honey, it wasn't your age that made you a bad mother. it was your self-absorbed attitude, which, sadly, you still have at your current age. you were all about you forty years ago, and you continue to be all about you. you excell at being a performer and a celebrity. you should have stuck with those callings and left parenting to people who can put others first.

Wow, harsh much?

It's harsh, but I kind of agree. Cher wasn't all that present and she's still very self-centered and a diva.

She thinks she was too "young" to have kids because of how times are now. Nowadays being a mom at 23 IS considered "young" but not back then. It was normal.

I think she thinks 23 was too young, because she was there, and now she is 64, and has had plenty of time and experiences that have made her wiser, and she also has hindsight now, as we all do about the past.

Additionally, her kids are adults now, so she sees the effect her parenting did have. Both of her kids ended up with addictions, Chastity became Chaz (but I do not know whether that is nature, nurture, or both), etc. So, she is able to look back and see where her mistakes might have been. Thus, she must feel like, compared to how she ended up being at 30 or 40 or whatever, she wasn't mentally ready to have kids at 23, when she did.

Age is just a number. There are women out there who had children much younger than 23 and their children are alright. I do not believe that her daughter's sex change would have made any difference. Reading the him/female story tells me that she was inclined from early to be a boy and that is exactly what (he) did.
