Gwyneth Paltrow: “My Dreams Are More For My Kids Now”

Between GOOP, Glee, the Country Music Awards and her new film Country Strong, Gwyneth Paltrow seems to be just about everywhere these days! The busy mom-of-two tells Hello! Canada that despite her amazing career success, she finds her true strength in the happy family life she shares with her husband Chris Martin and their kids Apple, 6, and Moses, 4.

On her “regular” life: “….Around 12 years ago I had all that career success and had a lot of attention pointed in my direction, and that was quite intense. But since then, I’ve had many years of living a more regular life, in which I stay at home and take my kids to school and pick them up. Then I go away for short bursts and do work. That works better for me.”

On her kids Apple and Moses: “They’re really good kids. They’re polite and they’re well-adjusted and they have good hearts. We’re strict with them to an extent, but we also try to be respectful of who they are and work with them when they really want something. For instance, Apple had been wanting to get her ears pierced from the age of two. Our nanny is Spanish and in Spain girls get their ears pierced when they’re born. Apple would see little Spanish girls and say, ‘Why can’t I have my ears pierced, too?’ So when she was five we let her have her ears pierced.'”

On helping Chris with his song-writing: “No! No, no, no, no, no! He wouldn’t ask me to either. I would be the worst person to come to – I would write the most sh** lyrics of all time. The kids could probably write better songs than me.”

On her ambitions: “Well, I’m open to trying anything that’ll be fun and challenging! I mean, there are still some plays that I would like to do and I still would love to do a musical on Broadway or London’s West End. But, honestly, my focus these days is more on my family than on my career. It’s a difficult balance to try to pull everything off. If I’m able to give myself one great project a year that isn’t going to disrupt everybody too much, then I go and do it – but I think my priorities are right, according to what my parents taught me. My dreams are more for my kids now – that they grow up to be good, kind, socially responsible people with good values. And that they find something to do in life that makes them happy.”

On being “the girl who has it all:” “Am I? Aren’t I annoying! I think that what gives me strength is my family. They keep everything in perspective and they make me feel very grateful, which is how I stay with my feet on the ground. I know how lucky I am and I don’t take it for granted. They give me strength to get through everything.”
