Chris Martin: Fatherhood Has Made My Music “More Focused”

He fronts one of the world’s most successful bands, but Coldplay singer Chris Martin says that it’s fatherhood that has given his music “a purpose.”

“It’s made it more focused,” Chris, who has kids Apple, 7, and Moses, 5, with Gwyneth Paltrow, tells CBS Sunday Morning of being a dad. “And you have a purpose. I like what it does. Just the idea of having to work hard so your kids are okay.”

As for his multi-talented wife – along with being an actress, she’s a singer, an author, a cook and the founder of the lifestyle site GOOP – Chris happily admits he hit the jackpot when Gwyneth said “I do.”

When asked if it’s true that he’s had only one serious relationship, the musician replies, “[That’s] right. I’m in it.” It’s a “big leap,” the interviewer goes on to note. “It’s a big leap? What, from being a loser, to going out with an Oscar winner?” Chris laughs. “It’s a giant leap. Let’s face it: it’s like wicking the lottery.”

It seems the feeling is mutual. Gwyneth said in a recent interview with Elle magazine, “I respect him so much as the father of my children. Like, I made such a good choice. He’s such a good dad. You can never be relaxed or smug and think, ‘I’ve got this thing.’ That’s also part of it: keeping yourself on your toes. I’m not going to take this for granted.”
