Jessica Simpson: Motherhood Is The Best, Most Challenging Thing

With baby #2 on the way, Jessica Simpson reflects on motherhood in a new interview with PEOPLE.

“Motherhood is the best thing I’ve ever experienced – and the most challenging,” says the Fashion Star mentor, who confirmed on Christmas Day that she and her fiance Eric Johnson are expecting again.

One of the more challenging parts is learning how to balance her work commitments with her family life.

“On some of the days of Fashion Star, I’m awake before [my daughter Maxwell] is awake, and I’m not home until she’s already back to sleep. That’s only happened about four times, but it makes the day awful. I definitely need to see my baby,” Jessica says, adding, “I get really sad if I don’t get to see her. And then when Maxwell sees me, she just stares at me and touches my face. I can tell she missed me. That breaks my heart.”

As for her partner in parenting, the singer can’t say enough about Maxwell’s doting daddy: “It is the sexiest thing in the world to watch how he handles [Maxwell]. We’re both learning together, but it’s fun because we both get to grow in our relationship together.”

Despite the challenges, Jessica says that she thinks they’ve “done such a good job” raising baby Maxwell so far. She admits, though, that being a mom has brought out a side in her she didn’t realize was there!

“There are little things that you kind of obsess over. I never knew how protective I was until I had my own child. I’m already thinking about intruders coming into the house and what our escape route would be.”

Maxwell is a beautiful girl. 🙂

Just beautiful. So glad Jessica found happiness and motherhood.

I love all the cute cardigans she wears. Very cute.

Wait till baby #2 comes….talk about challenging..and two so close in age! My babies were 3 years apart and it was challenging…but so much fun..and rewarding beyond words! Maxwell is very cute!

My parents had 3 kids all a year apart. My mom was a stay at home mom with an infant, a one year old and a two year old. I WILL not be doing the same thing when I have kids.

Please name baby #2 something that does not remind me of a maxi-pad…

Am I the only one who thinks Jess needs to lay off on the eye make up? She’s beautiful but she’s starting to look like a little trashy.
