Julia Roberts’ Secret: “Grit, Spit & a Whole Lot of Duct Tape”

Pretty Woman Julia Roberts covers the September issue of InStyle and opens up about her three kids – twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 9, and 7-year-old Henry – and her best-kept motherhood secrets.

On not wanting to be asked how she balances career and motherhood: “Because, (a) I’m not nearly as busy as people think, (b) half of everything just doesn’t get done — as long as no one is in tears, nobody smells bad and everyone’s sleeping peacefully, I’ve done my job — and (c) I have a supportive group of girlfriends, a great husband and an understanding family. The rest gets done with grit, spit and a whole lot of duct tape.”

On her kids helping with her red carpet outfits: “Often I’ll let the kids look at my outfit choices and say, ‘What do you like better—this or this?’ I just try to not take it so seriously. And it can be stressful on the red carpet. So it doesn’t matter how much you dress up or bejewel yourself, you’ve still got to feel like you.”

On not considering herself sexy: “I think I’ve always sort of been on the more boyish spectrum of girls. For example, I’ve never been chosen as ‘one of the top-five hottest actresses in a bikini.’ And honestly, it’s a godsend. When I was younger, I’d think, ‘Oh, I’m the prettiest one. It’s not Halle Berry. It’s not!’ But it is, you know?”
