Cate Blanchett: Motherhood "Toughens You Up" And Turns You Into "Mush"

Cate Blanchett: Motherhood "Toughens You Up" And Turns You Into "Mush"

Cate Blanchett is certainly among the most well-respected and loved actresses of our time, having the pick of the top scripts, as well as hefty list of award nominations and wins under her belt. The 40-year-old is also mom-to-three boys, Dashiell, 8, Roman, 6, and Ignatius, 2 with husband of 12-years Andrew Upton. Blanchett, who said living in an all-male home is “Really loud. So very loud,” sat down with Times Online to talk about how motherhood has changed her and her career.

On motherhood: “It toughens you up and makes you more pragmatic, yet at the same time it turns you into a bowl of mush. You see a child in distress or a puppy waiting to cross the street and you just want to weep. Maybe that mix is good for an actor. I guess the great thing is that it increases your ability to switch on and off. The work is no longer the only thing in your life. Other things count – and count more.”

On planning her films based on her children: “Anyone with children will tell you the same thing. Starting out as single women, our first questions about any job are, ‘What kind of role is it?’ and ‘Who will I be working with?’. But as soon as we have kids, we find ourselves asking, ‘How long’s the shoot?’ and ‘Can it be done in the school holidays?’ Suddenly, your attitude becomes very pragmatic. It has to, because shifting your household to another hemisphere is a major upheaval and there has to be a pretty compelling reason for you to do it.”

Cate Blanchett Puts Her Family First

Cate Blanchett Puts Her Family First

Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett says that her career choices are motivated more by her kids than her craft these days. The Australian-born actress, who has kids Dashiell, 8, Roman, 5, and Ignatius, 22 months, with her husband Andrew Upton, tells The Sunday Times how she manages to find time for just about everything.

On making career choices: "With films, it used to be a question of 'Who’s directing it?'; now it’s 'How long is the shoot and where are they filming?' Recently I said yes to something because filming is in the Easter holidays. The children need to be in school now, but that’s okay: it’s good to be focusing on the theatre.

On small indulgences: "I like having a bath and a facial. The children understand that when I have the mask on, it’s mummy time - it’s the working mother’s best friend, because you may be exhausted, but you don’t want people to know. I might also relax in the evening with a vodka and tonic."

Hugh Jackman Hosts An A-List Playdate

It looked like a blast of a playdate at New York's West Side Park today as Hugh Jackman took his son Oscar, 9, and Cate Blanchett's sons Dashiell, 8, Roman, 5, and Iggy, 1 1/2 , for some fun in the winter weather. Not one to sit on the sidelines, the Wolverine star seemed to enjoy their snowball fight just as much as the boys did!

Last year Hugh praised his pal, saying, “Cate Blanchett is superwoman. She is amazing on every level. I think she is flawless as a person.”

Both Aussie natives are currently in the Big Apple with their families while they perform on Broadway.
