Christy Turlington Launches No Mother's Day

Christy Turlington is determined to make a difference. Through her advocacy group Every Mother Counts, founded in 2010, the supermodel mom-of-two is working to raise awareness about the fact that a woman dies every 90 seconds from pregnancy and childbirth complications. This year Christy enlisted the help of her famous friends, including Debra Messing, Jennifer Connelly and Blythe Danner, to launch the group's No Mother's Day campaign (see the video below). Christy, who has kids Grace and Finn with her husband Edward Burns, talked to Lil Sugar about the initiative.
On why she doesn't strive for balance: "I feel like the word balance is overused, because balance sort of implies we must give and take all the time. When I consider the role of motherhood and everything else I enjoy, I prefer using the word integration. I am a woman, which means all of these roles are already integrated. I am a mother and a daughter, an activist and a model. As women, we're all of those things. These various roles that we play, they have to be integrated. It's not easy at all, and I don't think anyone could attempt to do it except women."

Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Connelly stepped out publicly for the first time since giving birth to her daughter Agnes Lark at the UN "Every Woman, Every Child" reception last week in New York City. The event shed light on worldwide healthcare issues in order to save the lives of 16 million women and children. Key figures in business, politics, health, culture, and media announced their support at the event, including supermodel Christy Turlington and rap superstar 50 Cent.
In a statement released to Celebrity Baby Scoop, Jennifer said she felt compelled to attend the reception, which supports a cause near and dear to her heart. "I’m a mother. I have three children...I felt that I had options [with pre-natal care]," the 40-year-old actress said.

Most of us know Christy Turlington from the catwalk, magazine spreads and television commercials. But the model mom-of-two is taking on a much different role these days: public health advocate and director of No Woman, No Cry, a documentary about maternal mortality worldwide.
This new mission began when the supermodel experienced complications after the birth of her first child, now 7-year-old daughter Grace. While she received the necessary treatments, she realized that other women around the world do not have access to adequate healthcare services as it relates to pregnancy and childbirth.

The 41-year-old supermodel - who is also mom to 6 1/2-year-old daughter Grace with husband Ed Burns - is a health and human rights advocate. She is currently completing a master's degree in Public Health at Columbia University and released a self-financed film on maternal health titled, No Woman, No Cry.
