Hargitay is a polyglot and speaks Hungarian, French, Spanish and Italian as well as English. On August 28, 2004, in Santa Barbara, California, she married Peter Hermann, an actor and writer who has often appeared on SVU as Defense Attorney Trevor Langan. On June 28, 2006, Hargitay gave birth to August Miklos Friedrich Hermann, by caesarean section. During the last months of her pregnancy, she took maternity leave from SVU, and was temporarily replaced by Connie Nielsen. She appeared with her baby, August, in a Got Milk? ad in January 2007. Hargitay is also the Godmother of her "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" co-star Christopher Meloni's daughter Sophia.Upon winning her Emmy on August 27, 2006, Hargitay made a point of thanking her father for everything he had done for her in her life. Just 17 days later, on September 14, 2006, her father died from multiple myeloma in Los Angeles, California, aged 80.
In late December 2008, she suffered a partially collapsed lung after taking a fall during a stunt on the set of Law & Order. She underwent surgery in January and returned to work shortly after. On March 3, 2009, Hargitay was hospitalized after suffering chest pains related to the injury. It was disclosed that she would probably need more surgery. However, she will only miss one episode of season 10 of SVU.

On the devastating loss that led to her two new babies: Hargitay was on the set of SVU when her cell phone rang. It was the birth mother: “Come now—it’s time!” At the hospital, Hargitay was handed her newborn, “this little angel.” Hargitay and her husband, actor Peter Hermann had two blissful days bonding with the girl, naming her. And then, “the long and short of it: The birth mother changed her mind,” Hargitay says, her eyes welling up at the memory. “It was nothing short of devastating. But…this is what I’ve come to understand about life: It was probably the greatest, happiest ending. I mean, it was so painful for us, but it was deeply joyful and deeply right for her.”

When it came time to pick the perfect name for her brand new baby girl, actress Mariska Hargitay says the whole family got involved - even 4-year-old August!
