Sarah McLachlan: "Having Kids Is Profound"

Sarah McLachlan the Grammy award-winning artist and mother of two girls - India, 8, and Taja, 3 - opens up to Spinner Canada about her career, her "gross" breakup and how her daughters inspired her to get out of bed every morning.

On her children and the profound effect they have had on her life: "I honestly can't remember what life was like before I was a mother. I think I had a lot of bloody time on my hands! Having kids is profound. All of a sudden you have to be 100-percent responsible for a human being other than yourself, and it's terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. Everything I do, my first thought is how it's going to affect them."

Sarah McLachlan: It "Took A Good While" To Feel Good Again After Split

Sarah McLachlan: It "Took A Good While" To Feel Good Again After Split

It had been seven years since Sarah McLachlan's last album had been released, and the Canadian songstress has said that her various family commitments are "the reason it takes so damn long" to write and release an album.

In an interview with the LA Times, McLachlan opened up about the challenges she has faced, including a divorce to longtime husband Ashwin Sood, the death of her beloved mother, parenting her "challenging" 8-year-old India and 3-year-old Taja, and her father's battle with Parkinson's.

On the inspiration for her latest album: "It's terribly pedestrian. There's nothing special about it. Half the bloody world is going through a divorce, more than that are having children. All of us have parents who are dying, or have died. It's just the life cycle."

On starting over again at 40: "I thought, I'm 40, and I've got two little kids. It doesn't matter how successful I am, how famous, how wealthy. I'm 40 and I've got two little kids! My friends all shook their heads and said, that's crazy talk. But I didn't feel that way. And it took a good while for me to come out from under that and feel good again."

Sarah McLachlan: I Would Encourage My Daughters To Do What Makes Them Happy

Sarah McLachlan: I Would Encourage My Daughters To Do What Makes Them Happy

Canadian songstress Sarah McLachlan has a busy summer ahead. The Building A Mystery singer is reviving her successful all-female tour Lilith Fair, and is releasing her first studio album in 7 years. To add to the chaos, McLachlan's two young daughters with ex-husband Ashwin Sood- India, 8, and Taja, 3- will be joining mom on the road.

In an interview with Parade, McLachlan opens up about her daughters personalities, and touches on the musical talent that has been passed down.

On her daughters' musical talent: "They are both very musically inclined. It's more sort of free-form singing right now. My older one was in piano lessons for a while, but she's not much of a joiner. She's not one to be put into a box. She's extremely independently minded and just wants to do her own thing. The little one definitely has really good pitch. At a year old, she was singing 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.'"

On following mom's footsteps: "I'd encourage [my daughters] to do whatever they want that makes them happy. There are two schools of thought: forcing them to take music lessons or letting them do what they want. I'm going to let them try everything and see what happens. What my oldest one loves to do right now more than anything is swim, so I'm just letting her do that as much as I can."

Sarah McLachlan On Music & Motherhood

Sarah McLachlan will be joined by her daughters India, 8, and Taja, 3, when she hits the road for this summer's Lilith Fair tour.

The single mom - she and her husband Ashwin Sood split in 2008 - says that her girls gave her plenty of feedback on her new album Laws of Illusion.

"At one my point, my eldest said, ‘God, all these songs, I'm so sick of them. They all sound the same,'" Sarah tells E! "It's because, of course, I'm listening to one song 50 times!…Quite frankly as far as they're concerned, I'm mommy and this Sarah McLachlan thing is just an annoyance."

The Canadian songstress reveals that both of her daughters have inherited a musical appreciation, saying, "They both love music. I think maybe my younger one's a little more musically inclined, but my older one, she's an incredible dancer. They've both got a great sense of rhythm."

Laws of Illusion, Sarah's first album of original songs in 7 years, is in stores now.
