Kendra Wilkinson: I Was “Really Depressed” After Hank’s Birth

When season two of Kendra premieres on March 14, fans will see a different side of new mom Kendra Wilkinson as she opens up about her struggles with post-baby blues. The reality starlet spoke frankly to OK! about her darkest days.

The 24-year-old new mom said that she had a hard time after Hank’s birth on December 11.

After giving birth, I never brushed my hair, my teeth, or took a shower,” Kendra said. “I looked in the mirror one day and was really depressed. I thought, “Look at me!” I had this glamorous life in L.A., and now [in Indianapolis] I didn’t.”

Kendra admits there were some very dark times. “A couple of times, I even said, ‘I just have nothing to live for,'” she admits.

The former Girls Next Door star also talked to In Touch about her struggles.

I went through some depression after having the baby, which you’ll get to see on the show. It wasn’t complete postpartum depression. I was just going through some things that every woman deals with afterward – like the way my body looked.”

Kendra found one way to beat the blues – having sex! During a recent appearance on Chelsea Lately, Chelsea Handler asked Kendra and Hank about their sex life as new parents.

“[At] the doctor’s appointment following up on everything, he goes, ‘Have you guys had sex?'” Kendra said. “This was, like, five weeks after. We were like, ‘I guess we have to be honest. Yes, we did.’ And he’s like, ‘Ugh! You can’t do that!'”

“We were careful,” Hank added.

Did you also struggle with depression after the birth of your baby?

  1. Since the day her son was born she didn’t stop talking and it was all “I’m over the moon, this is so great” all the time. And now all of a sudden she struggled depression? And cured it with sex? Please Kendra, cut the crap. /big eyeroll/

    • When you’re depressed you don’t like telling people “I’m Depressed” or “I feel like crap”. You don’t even want to admit to yourself that you might even be depressed. Almost a year later when I look back, I do realize that I was depressed and am thankful that those “Dark times” are behind me 🙂

  2. Not a Kendra fan.

Well, some symptoms of depression can be helped with exercise. And while it will be pointed out about all of her lovey-dovey quotes until this, it would not have been okay if she had talked about wanting to drive into a wall.

Brooke Shields got enough crap for everyone when she admitted.

  3. clearly you know nothing about depression, especially after a baby. NOTHING is cut and dried and one of the very biggest problems with depression is the ups and downs with emotions. One day its fine, and the others you’re hardly able to get out of bed.

  4. I was Depressed after my daughter was born but I think that my situation at that time made it more sressfull for me. My mom was staying with me for a few weeks and that made me despise my husband b/c I felt he wasn’t helping me enough with the baby. Sometimes I felt like I should tell my mom to leave that way my husband would help me more. I was also dealing with the recent death of my cousin and the fact that she wasn’t there for my daughter’s birth like she had promised she would. A lot of mixed emotions at that time 🙁 hopefully the next time around it wont be that tough!

  5. IMHO She wants Hank’s money and she’ll leave him eventually. Indy vs. Hollywood? C’mon, she’s 24 years old. She wants to party.

  6. Its actually called baby blues, its very normal because of hormones. Postpartum depression is when the hormones don’t regulate after child birth. Baby blues can last up to 6 weeks post partum, post partum depression usually doesn’t go away without some kind of treatment weather its a natural form or a medicated form.

  7. While I certainly feel for women who honestly suffer from depression, I can’t help but feel that this is engineered simply to increase interest in her show. More likely she woke up and realized she was living in Indianapolis and that alone would send a lot of people over the edge.

  8. I do believe there are some woman that suffer from this but I do not believe her. She just wants to stay in the tabloids. Now she’s no longer pregnant, the baby’s had some photoshoots no one cares anymore so she needs something new.

And why is she outside in her pyjamas?

  9. i think she’s just faking it. if i’m really depressed, i wouldn’t “tweet” like 1000 times a day.

    • I’m with Anonymous above- she may be faking it. I know baby blues and postpartum depression are very real things, and I know that despite her outward appearances, she really might have experienced some depression. But something about it… just rings false to me, I don’t know… seems like she might be doing it for her show. Seems suspect.

  10. Post-partum depression is certainly real, but it doesn’t start until 6 to 12 months after giving birth to your baby, so this is not what she had. It’s a publicity stunt, which is sad because so many women really do suffer through PPD, and she is cheapening it.

And, if that doctor actually said, “Ugh, you can’t do that!” he needs to have his license revoked. That’s ridiculous.

  11. Are you kidding me ppl duh the first few weeks after having a baby suck! No sleep, you are in pain, you are fat and you have crazy hormones! I’m sure she had had the baby blues or some depression I wouldn’t believe someone who said they didn’t especially after their first child. I’m sure she’s doing better now I doubt it’s for publicity her show had great ratings and just the fact that he had a baby will make people watch ! Plus you weren’t there how would you know what it was like for her …. But I don’t believe she cured it with sex that’s some bs

  12. Annoymous please do your reseach before you start talking.
    Postpartum Blues
More than half of women may have depression for a short time after pregnancy. These are feelings of anxiety, irritation, tearfulness, and restlessness that are often called “the postpartum blues.” This generally occurs in the first few weeks after pregnancy and goes away soon, without the need for treatment.
    Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression is a more serious condition that affects between 8 – 20% of women after pregnancy, especially the first 4 weeks. It is necessary to seek medical attention to treat postpartum depression.

  13. Wow, I thought she had never been quote ‘HAPPIER AND OVER THE MOON’. These celebrities just say anything that can get them attention.

  14. She’s been raving about how happy she is since little Hank was born, and now all of a sudden she was depressed? Puh-lease!

  15. I find it very hard to belive that she was depressed. The only reason she was depressed was because the tabloids left her alone and dont want her pictures. Plus with Hank she is such a fake-on her show she says her family means to the world to her. With Hef the only thing that meant to her was partying and she still does. Plus she seems to be using her baby to get covers and blogs about her. Hope her show gets cancelled-and then we would see her true colors if she even has that.

  16. Oh Please! This is a silly woman. She didn’t brush her teeth, bath etc., yet the minute her baby was born she was on every magazine cover (hair & cosmetics). The only thing she was upset about was leaving the playboy mansion and loosing that money and a place to live. Remember she tried desperately to have a baby with Hugh Hefner to secure her future, but it didn’t work. Pathetic.

  17. PPD can happen any time during the first year and sometimes beyond. There is no rule about “after 6 weeks” or “between 6 and 12 months”. Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt, since none of us really know whether it was depression or just “baby blues”. One of the reasons more women don’t seek treatment for PPD is that they are afraid to admit to their depression. Labeling women as “faking it” is part of the problem! Women need to know that support is available, and they won’t be chastised for admitting they are depressed.
