Gisele Bündchen: Pregnancy Was “Sacred” For Me

Hot mama! New mom Gisele Bündchen graces the April edition of Vogue and opens up about the “amazing” experience of giving birth to baby Benjamin, how pregnancy was “sacred” for her and how she stays so fit.

On choosing the name Benjamin Rein: “I wanted him to be called River because I wanted something always flowing, immortal. My husband said, ‘There’s no way we’re going to call him River.’ But my father’s name is Reinoldo, so it’s a homage to him. And it’s like water.”

On giving birth: “I wanted to experience the transformation. It was the most amazing experience of my life, feeling him come through my body. And once he was born, I never felt so empowered as looking at him and thinking, Oh, my God, we did it together!”

On only trusting her mother with her newborn son: “I don’t trust anyone else with Benjamin.”

On regaining her figure almost instantly: “I think it’s muscle memory. I did kung fu up until two weeks before Benjamin was born, and yoga three days a week. I think a lot of people get pregnant and decide they can turn into garbage disposals. I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds.”

On having 2 boys: “I’m so lucky to have my little munchkin, and I have two because I also have John. We don’t see him all the time, unfortunately, but we’re building a place in Los Angeles to be closer to him.”

On remaining out of the public eye during her pregnancy: “I felt like my pregnancy was a sacred moment for me. I stayed in Boston and I didn’t work apart from the contracts I have, and then I only let them use my face.”

  1. ^^Thats what I was thinking, ONLY trusting her mom and not the father of the child. Please, thats ridiculous.

  2. ^^ She obviously meant the only other person except her and Tom. As in, she doesn’t want a nanny/babysitter. Actually, it would have sounded weird if she had explicitly said she trusts Tom with the baby since he’s the father and that’s obvious. (Does any mother ever go out of her way to state that she trusts her husband with his own child- its sort of a given, no?)
Geez, the lengths people go to to find something negative.

  3. This was a fantastic interview. She’s so down to earth and refreashing. I wish all the media outlets would quit reporting on the pregnancy part- that was a very small part of the interview and the media takes it out of context and makes it seem like she’s bragging.

Please read her whole interview before saying she gives terrible interviews, its actually quite the opposite.

  4. Gisele is beautiful and Tom Brady is absolutely gorgeous. And yes, they are very nice people. I live outside of Boston and everyone who knows them said that they are extremely nice to everyone.

  5. On the contrary to all the other “YAWN” comments and interviews, this one here is really refreshing !!!
Shes really one of those who is saying something quite interesting and new and whats most important…something that is kinda worth mentioning.
The only annoying thing about this all are the comments of some envious or whatever readers that always search for something bad that is not there.

  6. i bet bridget moynahan doesn’t trust gisele with john either, but too bad…bridget doesn’t have a choice. also, there is no need to judge other women who turn into “garbage disposals” while they are pregnant. i’m just 14, so i don’t really have a kid, but it’s kinda mean to call people that.

  7. I loved her interview and WOW she is drop dead gorgeous on the cover! Just like a 1990’s Supermodel!!! she is amazing. and please her interview was refreshing and really good. Gislee has a sense of humor, its not going anywhere. she is not some stuck ob broad who can never take a joke. if you know her like I do, you would know she is the goofiest person on the planet. she is a sweetie. Not to mention drop dead gorgeous!

I am so sick of people treating her as if shes damned if shes does, dmaned if she doesn’t . its getting real old.

  8. you know what this whole garbage comment is just wrong. You know what I had two babies and ate what I wanted and I had two HEALTHY babies. One 7.13 and the other 9.3. and although my body isnt what it used to I am happy to be a mommy and I gave my body up to be a great mom. Shame on her. thats like me saying that skinny b*tch is a horrible mother because she didnt eat enough durring her pregnancy. Funny, they never announced how big the baby was. Bet he was TINY!!!

  9. After this interview, I really don’t like her. The garbage disposal comment was rude. Maybe if she tried harder not to insult other people, more of them would like her.

  10. I thought the garbage disposals comment was funny… and true, I know so many women who have used pregnancy as an excuse to stuff their faces

  11. About the “garbage disposal” thing- I love that she tells it like it is without worrying about what people will think of her because of it. What she said is true, a lot of women do start to eat junk because they think pregnancy is an excuse to be out of shape. Its not like she was saying that about every women except her- if you’re not one of them- good for you, but there are many who are and those are the ones she was talking about.

  12. I am getting so sick of people saying negative things about her based on the media’s twisted interviews and lies. Please read more about her and read the ACTUAL interview on
She’s actually really laid back, goofy and down-to-earth. She comes from a really humble background and has always been appreciative of the opportunities she’s gotten and given back in whatever ways she can.
Enough with trying to find negative things about her just because she’s gorgeous, rich and has an equally gorgeous husband, and now, baby.

  13. This was such a great interview, and everything written here was such a small part of it. The media has a serious obsession with weight and pregnancy/post-baby bodies. Out of the ENTIRE interview, this is the only part most media outlets are reporting on.
Read the full interview, you’ll have a totally different idea of her- really.

  14. Beautiful woman- inside and out.

Its so refreshing to see an actual model on the cover. And her interview is such a nice change from the cheating athletes, reality tv stars and messed up hollywood celebs that grace all the covers these days and whine about their “difficult” life.
Compared to most celebs, Gisele is really a together, grounded and positive person. Instead of looking at the positives, you’re all nit-picking about her word choices and blunty true words (the “garbage disposal” thing is true and you know it).

  15. Here’s some parts of the interview that have nothing to do with America’s greatest obsession and the only part of the interview most media outlets have cared to report on- weight:

Gisele started early; by fifteen she was in a “model apartment” in New York, or folded into airline coach seats to go to model in Italy, France, Japan. There’s a small tattoo of a star inside her left wrist. “My grandmother told me and my sisters that everyone has a special star. I looked at my star every night before bed, just like brushing my teeth. When I came to New York and I opened the window of the thirty-fifth-floor apartment, there’s light pollution and fog, and I couldn’t see my star. So I drew it on my wrist with a pen, but it kept washing away. Then I went to a tattoo parlor on Second Avenue and had it done. It was something I had been missing, and now, no matter where I went, it came with me.”

She consciously created the Gisele persona as she started to become a star herself. “I was in the fashion shows in Milan, I was seventeen, I was doing like 100 shows. People were asking, ‘How does it feel to be the model of the moment?’ It was hard for me to answer as myself. I barely spoke English. I thought, I have to give my best because they trust me with that. I invented this other person, and she could do everything. She wasn’t afraid; she was able to be ballsy and risky and sexy or androgynous. She was bold. I had to believe in myself as this person that was strong, up-front, invincible, and positive, who knew what she was doing, even though I really didn’t.

“I’ve worked for fourteen years, but I don’t think anybody in the business really knows me, because there is that other person.”

Three years ago, when Gisele met Tom Brady, she moved up to Boston to be with him. It was a vocational as well as an emotional turning point.

“I’m a person who normally works 300 days a year, and here I am in Boston in this apartment and Tom’s playing, and what do I do here? On my Web site, a lot of girls were asking me questions about feeling awkward. I wanted to work with girls who were fourteen to sixteen.” She wanted to be heard and chose the Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers—”They take care of girls from shelters, girls who have been abused. I came up with a nine-week program and went to talk to them about empowerment and self-esteem.”

    It was a shock.

“I thought I was going to be able to save them, guide them. When I got there they were like, ‘Who are you?’ There were a lot of Latina and black girls. In Brazil, everyone is a mixture, and no one thinks about it. In America, maybe you have more problems with that. It took me a week or two just to get them to sit down with me and talk. I had my yoga teacher come up from New York to teach them yoga. I wanted to share something, but I ended up realizing that you cannot save anybody. I forced it, and it didn’t quite go through.”
ejaa was born of that frustration, as a way for Bündchen to impart some of what she has learned, but by subliminal means.

“I wanted to teach girls to love themselves and take care of their bodies. What is the first thing you see every morning? Your face! What do you put every day on your face? Cream! I have made the simplest, purest cream—an everyday cream—but it comes with an affirmation.”

Her manufacturers, she says, “were ready to kill me. I wanted the cream to be organic—they explained that if it’s organic, it’s alive, and that means it can’t survive for a long time.” The products are now called “natural,” the ingredients are held to a high standard of purity, and the preservative is coconut oil.

She also wanted a mud mask. A real mud mask.

“When I was a teenager, I had pimples—oh, God, every time someone looked at my face I thought they were looking at my pimples. I put mud on my face to dry them out, and it worked. “I can do all this because I’m financing it on my own terms, and if I want to give away 5 percent of everything I make, no one can tell me not to.”

Sejaa will not be sold in stores but on a Web site, to create a community—”So I can give my little tips, and it’s not me telling anyone to have an awakening.”

  16. People in this country are dillusional….Alot of people do turn into garbage disposals when they become pregnant….The only people that get offended are the people who TURNED into garbage disposals when they were pregnant. Dont get offended…do something about it. Another thing….while I do believe that nobody should ever be put down or made to feel bad about themselves for how they look…(I truely believe there is way to much emphasis on outer beauty) I dont think that putting overweight people in fashion magazines is any more healthy than putting anorexic people in magazines. When will people wake up and realize that body image should be about your health…not making everybody believe that they are beautiful no matter what size they are…that is not healthy ..we arent telling anorexic people that , that is beautiful. Sorry, a little off topic but wondered if anyone else thought this.

  17. yeah she is amazing. inside and out. funny how haters and media outlets only like to pick at something so they can turn it around into a negative. her interview was amazing. I didn’t see one problem with it!!!!

  18. this blog is about celebrities(who Gisele is), their babies and their pregnancies. of course we see here these parts of interview what say about her pregnancy and baby. when i open this page i dont expect to read what Gisele thinks about new collections but about her son and step son.
the truth is that many women gain a lot during pregnancy. the truth is also that many use pregnancy as an excuse to eat too much. but there is many women who are lucky and stay slime as well. saying “gabridge disposal” was a little bit rude way but it is truth.
i dont understand the negative comments when she talks about John. he is part of her life and that’s great she loves him. i dont know why it annoys so much. i can imagin what people would say about her if she had never said anything about her step son.

  19. To those judging her about trusting only her mother. For God sake, I trust only my mother. My husband? yeah ok, I trust him, but what does he know about children? I move him to one side, and there my mom comes. And then automatically she becomes the only one I trust with my son. If I go out to a place and my husband is at home with my son, I prefer leaving him with my mother because then she knows what to do whereas I know my husband cares and loves him but still he doesnt have the ‘motherhood’ feeling towards a kid which my mom owns after 4 kids.

So here, I am sure Giselle trusts her husband, but not in the way everyone understood her. Give her a break.

  20. The garbage disposal comment is so funny and so true. A lot of women use pregancy as an excuse to over eat, gain a ton of weight and then after the baby is born they NEVER lose the weight!

Gisele is gorgeous and she has a VERY refreshing personality! Oh, and her husband is so handsome!

  21. damn, i cant belive she just said that..garbage disposal? lol

Give me the interviews and article of REAL, FLABBY Kendra anyday, she is more interesting to listen to than this wanna be perfect, pregnancy, birth goddess LOL (puke)

  22. Being pregnant is a thing to be thankful and to celebrate and not to be afraid of. Just apply an olive oil to lessen the visibility any stretch marks on your tummy.

  23. How do stars look so amazing after giving birth! whats the secret to losing the baby weight!
