Alicia Silverstone Responds To Mouth-Feeding Controversy

Don’t get lippy with Alicia Silverstone! The new mom stands by her choice to feed her son baby-bird style.

“I can understand that it would make some people feel uncomfortable, possibly, because it’s new to them,” the new mom of 11-month-old son Bear Blu told Entertainment Tonight on Friday. “But I do want to let you know that this has been going on for thousands of years — still going on all over the place — and it’s natural.”

Last month, the Clueless star posted a video on her website pre-chewing food and feeding Bear mouth-to-mouth. The video sparked immediate online buzz, leaving people questioning whether or not the practice was hygienic.

The actress, 35, defended herself, stating, “It’s a part of the weaning process, so while I’m still breastfeeding it’s just a way to introduce him to food when he doesn’t have teeth… and he can’t chew.”

The toothless cutie, born May 5, 2011, is the first child for Alicia and husband Christopher Jareki.

My kid is healthy. My kid’s the happiest baby ever. He didn’t have teeth and he would choke,” she continued. ” And, basically, how it started was simply that Bear – when he was about 5 months old – I’d be eating and he would come at me with his little mouth open and be on my mouth trying to get the food out of my mouth.”

The eco-friendly mom added that it’s “neat” her son wants to eat healthy vegetables and that she has “no regrets” posting the video.

  1. Uh yeah maybe in 3rd world indigenous countries .. She is a freak and a half and her son will no doubt have emotional scars from all the (well deserved) criticism of his hippie freak mom

  2. It’s been done for thousands of years because it HAD to be done, because some people don’t live in a society that has baby food available or blenders or even forks I guess. It doesn’t take much to mash up some food, a good old fashioned fork will do the trick. No one is telling you to feed your infant a steak, but there are plenty of sanitary, non-disgusting ways of making the food edible for them.
She did it for attention, she got what she wanted.

  3. It was natural back when there is no baby food. It is still going on in places where there is no baby food. She is just doing this for show. If she knew it would make such a controversy, why filming it and putting it online?

  4. I think she should be able to parent how she wants to. You all are acting like she has given him some deadly disease or is abusing or molesting him, for God’s sake! Grow up, stop acting like know-it-all, catty hens, and stop trying to burn her at the stake. He looks fine and happy. He’s not gonna have emotional scars, are you kidding me? How much do you remember from when you were almost 1 anyway?! And btw, many people in other countries raise kids just fine (and so do hippies, vegans, etc…thats directed to the arrogant uneducated Anonymous poster who commented about that). Believe it or not people, Americans are not the be all and end all gurus of childrearing practices. They vary from around the world, and considering that one out of three people in America is in jail or under community control, and most kids in other countries kick American kids you-know-whats on standardized testing, a lot of other countries are doing WAY better jobs as parents than the ones here are…and nutrition should be sorta be at the bottom on your list of your worries, people. As long as he is healthy, happy, and gets fed, leave the poor people alone and stop your self righteous attitudes!

  5. Some of you are so unbelievably hateful. Wow. How sad. Her giving him food from her mouth will ‘destroy’ him? REALLY? She’s a freak? She’s disgusting? How about you reserve your insults for people who beat and malnourish their children and not for an obviously loving mother with an obviously healthy child. Just because it’s not something YOU would do (and probably not something I would do either) doesn’t make her a bad person for doing it and the judgement on this site is INSANE.

  6. I have 3 kids and I have fed them the way she did… and it’s OK and not at all gross. Furthermore, i am from Canada and not from <3rd world indigenous countries>.

  7. It is completely natural to feed children this way. It’s normal and how God* intended. The chewing breaks down the food and the saliva begins the digestive process to help the weaning childs digestive systems to begin functioning appropriately. Interestingly children introduced to feeding this way grow up with more internal security and contentment (+ less allergies). I’m from New Zealand & its not practised so much now but a few decades ago it was a common sight in rural farming areas for the baby to be passed around the table and fed by both parents and siblings. *[For those interested Bible says ‘in the last days..people will be without NATURAL affection… 2Timothy3:3 in the original languages natural means as in Nature= behaving as the animal kingdom in their affections= physical care of their young. it also implies that because this is becoming lost, our children will grow up ungrateful, abusive & disobedient to parents]

  8. It’s natural but it also jump starts tooth decay, because mom passes on her oral bacteria to the baby. Babies aren’t born with the type of bacteria that are responsible for cavities, they get them from their sharing saliva, sucking on something that’s had someone else’s mouth on it, or sharing chewed food.

  9. Kind of funny reading all these comments from people admonishing others to stop judging this whackadoodle. However did anyone see her on “The View”? She refused to shake Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s outstretched hand because she didn’t agree with Elisabeth’s political views. Another classless moron using her kid to try and stay relevant.
