Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough is a father-of-two, to sons James, 5, and Holden, 1, with wife Leigh. Howie recently caught up with parenting expert Daddy Nickell for My Life As A Dad, the popular web series that delves into the lives of celebrity and professional athlete dads. Howie was happy to chat about his experience in being a father!
During the My Life As A Dad segment, Howie discusses balancing his Backstreet Boys worldwide tour and family life.
“I am very blessed to have an unbelievable wife and a ‘Super Mom’ who is my partner and does a lot of the work herself with the kids,” Howie says. “I am in that transition of life right now where I am really trying to be able to deal with my work and and do it diligently, and also come back home and be a father and a family man who really tries to devote time to my kids.”
The boy band star also shares how becoming a father changed him.
It’s definitely a new journey for me,” he says. “I’ve come to realize that kids really and truly make you be selfless. They are not on the same schedule as you, thinking ‘Okay, Daddy has to work.’ They are just looking forward to that quality time with me.”
He goes on to chat about what it was like growing up with a dad who worked three jobs: “My mother pretty much raised us kids. I didn’t really have that quality one-on-one time as much as I would have wanted to have with my father. This time around, I am trying to make sure I do as much as I can to have that quality time with my kids.”
And what does he do for “Daddy Time” with his sons?
“Normally, I try to get up with the kids in the morning. I try to take my oldest to school every day…then I come back and have quality time with my youngest one, because he is one year old and still at home. By that time, we play around with him and he takes his naps. Then I pick up my oldest son from his school and we come back and get a little bit of quality time in, like going to a park down the street. We live on the beach in Florida, so when I get a little bit of time and the weather is nice, I’ll try taking him out to the beach.”
