Veganism or consuming a vegan diet has been gaining popularity among people over the past decade. More and more people are putting down their knives and picking up their forks instead.

Whether it’s for an overall healthier lifestyle, your part in helping the environment or the most common reason, to be a voice for the animals veganism is a personal choice. But is it a good idea to raise your child as a vegan?

Some Celebrity Moms Have Embraced Veganism

Celebrities have helped paved the way to making the vegan lifestyle more mainstream. Take actress Alicia Silverstone. The Clueless actress, 41, has been a long time vegan activist and has raised her 7-year-old son Bear Blu as a vegan since birth.

On the road to Hana. The feeling I have being with Bear on our adventure is so giddy…divine…so free and I feel so lucky to have carved out this time for us to just be. And being his mom, caring for him, is so sweet and lovely. Sand, rain, all of it. Beach walks at night, paddle boarding on the Hanalei River. The drive from Hanalei to Ke’e Beach-it has a wild and moody feeling. Anini Beach is so calm and nice to swim in with good vibes from the people hanging there. We stopped at the St. Regis for a quick look-the view there is so epic and beautiful…we met some lovely friends and decided to return the next night for some hot tub in the rain action ..chasing kids and hopping back and forth between tub and pools. The oceanside path that runs along the Coconut Coast. So pretty. All with my little man Bear. When he is tired at bedtime he is so insanely cute and has so many stories, thoughts and ideas. I want to savor these nights. I'm a naughty mommy for staying up late cozy in bed chatting and storying with him.

Silverstone has said that being a vegan has, “turned me into a health nut because you feel so good, you feel so different. Being able to do something that is good for the earth, good for the animals, and good for you all at the same time seems like such a no-brainer. It’s like the biggest ‘Duh!’”

What do Health Professionals Say?

Feeding your child a vegan diet has been a controversial move and for parent’s making that decision for their children often sparks a debate. So is it safe? Medical experts weigh in and this is what they had to say.

Ashanti Woods, M.D., a pediatrician at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center, says “Children who consume a vegan diet are generally as healthy, if not more healthy, than children who have a ‘normal’ diet,” Dr. Woods points out that there are various layers of veganism but pediatricians pay extra attention to true vegans, i.e., those who swear off all animal products. “The more restrictions on a diet, the more pediatricians become concerned because these children are at risk for nutritional deficiencies,” he says.

When followed properly and with great care a vegan diet can be a step up from the “standard Amercian diet,” Dana Simpler, M.D., a primary care practitioner at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center, says.

Simpler also confirmed that both adults and children do not need their protein source from animals provided they are getting their important minerals and nutrients from others sources like grains, beans, and legumes.

  1. it’s fine to raise a child on a vegan diet Stella McCartney has been one since she was 3 1/2 years old stop demonizing vegans

  2. I think its a good idea to raise a child on a vegan diet. But I want to know from you what the limited age of this diet idea is? Thanks in advance for your answer.

  3. what is a VEGAN? A vegan (pronounced VEE-gun) is someone who, for various reasons, chooses to avoid using or consuming animal products. While vegetarians choose not to use flesh foods, vegans also avoid dairy and eggs, as well as fur, leather, wool, down, and cosmetics or chemical products tested on animals.

why VEGAN? Veganism, the natural extension of vegetarianism, is an integral component of a cruelty-free lifestyle. Living vegan provides numerous benefits to animals’ lives, to the environment, and to our own health–through a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The consumption of animal fats and proteins has been linked to heart disease, colon and lung cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, kidney disease, hypertension, obesity, and a number of other debilitating conditions. Cows’ milk contains ideal amounts of fat and protein for young calves, but far too much for humans
