Veganism or consuming a vegan diet has been gaining popularity among people over the past decade. More and more people are putting down their knives and picking up their forks instead.
Whether it’s for an overall healthier lifestyle, your part in helping the environment or the most common reason, to be a voice for the animals veganism is a personal choice. But is it a good idea to raise your child as a vegan?
Some Celebrity Moms Have Embraced Veganism
Celebrities have helped paved the way to making the vegan lifestyle more mainstream. Take actress Alicia Silverstone. The Clueless actress, 41, has been a long time vegan activist and has raised her 7-year-old son Bear Blu as a vegan since birth.

Silverstone has said that being a vegan has, “turned me into a health nut because you feel so good, you feel so different. Being able to do something that is good for the earth, good for the animals, and good for you all at the same time seems like such a no-brainer. It’s like the biggest ‘Duh!’”
What do Health Professionals Say?
Feeding your child a vegan diet has been a controversial move and for parent’s making that decision for their children often sparks a debate. So is it safe? Medical experts weigh in and this is what they had to say.
Ashanti Woods, M.D., a pediatrician at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center, says “Children who consume a vegan diet are generally as healthy, if not more healthy, than children who have a ‘normal’ diet,” Dr. Woods points out that there are various layers of veganism but pediatricians pay extra attention to true vegans, i.e., those who swear off all animal products. “The more restrictions on a diet, the more pediatricians become concerned because these children are at risk for nutritional deficiencies,” he says.

When followed properly and with great care a vegan diet can be a step up from the “standard Amercian diet,” Dana Simpler, M.D., a primary care practitioner at Baltimore’s Mercy Medical Center, says.
Simpler also confirmed that both adults and children do not need their protein source from animals provided they are getting their important minerals and nutrients from others sources like grains, beans, and legumes.
